Once upon when they were young

Songs of innocence played unstrung

She saw the boy, he saw the girl

Eyes connected, love unfurled

Loves that sought not themselves to please

Just the gift to give outward ease

Then came the time for them to take a leave

And walk separately among the ancient trees

Helpless, naked, but still proud

Till each saw the fiend in the clouds

The two children now neither pure nor white

Find themselves, hearts aligned, in time to fight

Tell each other: “Love, Let us sit and write

Even if we can find only hallow reeds

We’ll turn them into pens to defy this enemy

In solidarity and never violence

There’s an army of us in defiance

Our words will stain the water clear

Though never enough to not need fear.
